DETAILS:
Join us October 10th, 11th, and 12th to celebrate our 9th Annual Art Glass Auction.  This is our largest fundraiser of the year, helping us to finance the high operating costs involved in running a nonprofit glass school. Your attendance and support help us to maintain and upgrade our facility and equipment so that we can continue to offer quality classes to the public. By purchasing an Auction ticket, you also help support the many artists who have chosen the Eugene Glass School as their location for premier art glass education!

On Friday, October 10, at 6:30pm, you are invited to meet the donating artists at Eugene Glass School, enjoy wine tasting with Ray Walsh of Capitello Wines and Buzz Kawders of Domaine Meriwether Wines, and goblet making demonstrations in both the flameworking studio and the hot shop.  Artwork made by the Network Charter School students will be on display and for sale to benefit the high school program.  At 7:30pm renowned glass artist, Shane Fero, will share his view of the glass art world and its effect on his life, with a slideshow lecture. At 8:30pm, there will be live music with The Swingin' Marmalukeys and more glass demonstrations.

On Saturday, October 11, you are cordially invited to join us for our 9th Annual Art Glass Auction and Benefit Dinner at the Downtown Athletic Club, Ballroom. Over 100 donated works of art by prominent glass artists from all over the world will be auctioned to benefit the Eugene Glass School, a nonprofit organization. This event begins at 5:00pm with the Silent Auction, followed by the Live Auction and Benefit Dinner at 7:30pm.

The Kjaer Family would like to invite you to join them on Sunday, October 12, at the Hult Center for the performing Arts, Silva Concert Hall, for Fauré Requiem featuring Eugene Symphony and Eugene Youth Symphony.  The performance is a gift to the community in honor and memory of George Kjaer, founding president of the Eugene Glass School.  Tickets can be picked up at the Hult Center Box Office Tuesday through Friday from 12pm - 5pm and Saturday from 11am - 3pm beginning September 19, 2008, online for a $2.00 fee at www.eugenesymphony.org or at the Eugene Glass School after October 1, 2008, 10am-5pm.

We welcome and encourage the community to stop by the Eugene Glass School and watch as local glass artists blow and sculpt beautiful art glass centerpieces for the upcoming auction.  Artists will be working daily starting September 24th from 10am-5pm.  Call for further glass blowing schedule.

Eugene Glass School continues to   expand and evolve into a haven for glass artists, offering quality instruction and a space where artists can create and find the support needed to see through any project. The Eugene Glass School strives to be a resource for all levels of glass artistry.

For thousands of years, glass has been a medium for artisans to create objects and forms serving cultural needs for both utility and decoration. For the artist and craftsman, glass is a very special and seductive medium whose qualities respond to changes in heat and atmosphere, inspiring exploration and creativity.

Featured Beadmaking Classes

In this two day class come prepared to sculpt hearts, bones, skull pendants and various beads and buttons. Both on and off mandrel techniques will be covered. You are incouraged to bring your sketch books filled with ideas. This is an excellent opportunity to learn from a glass artist whose ability to combine color and shape is out of this world!

Michele Goldstein $295 + $25 material fee
November 15-16 Sat-Sun 10am-5pm.
LAMPWORK BEADMAKING FROM STAINED GLASS
At the end of this course students have the ability to create multi-colored beads and focals using inexpensive stained glass, a torch and basic bead making tools. The class will be taught on dual gas torches (oxygen/propane). A single gas torch (propane) will also be demonstrated. The techniques are simple and straightforward, and when combined with the amazing palette of quality stained glass available, students produce jewelry-quality lampwork beads in a very short time. We will be adding glitz and sparkle to beads using dichroic glass and goldstone. Lampwork from stained glass is not done by cutting strips of stained glass and using them as if they were rods! This technique mirrors hot shop glass work more than traditional lampwork. A hot gather of glass is created at the end of a Pyrex punty (handle) and the artistry in placing color and design in the hot gather takes place long before the glass approaches a mandrel to be wound into a bead or small object. That the hot gather
of glass is from traditional stained glass is where the name comes from.

AN OLD-SCHOOL APPROACH TO COLOR
If you have ever marveled at the beauty of colored borosilicate glass, you have Paul Trautman to thank. The originator of boro colored rod has plenty of wisdom and experience to share in this two-day, hands-on class. Topics will include: diluting, blending and mixing pre-made colors into your own custom palette; mixing various chemicals into glass for unique colors; and some of Paul’s favorite oldschool lab techniques, like making hollow ground-glass stoppers for bottles. The curriculum will be partly student-driven; Paul will adjust to the level of the students in the class. However, torch experience is required for participation in this workshop. It will be geared toward borosilicate glass, but
Paul also makes 104 COE soft-glass and can discuss the color properties of both. The primary goal of this class is to help the student gain flexibility and versatility with color in the torch flame.
